bizzy, and a mish mash of things.

Whew. It's so hard to be productive and festive this time of year, because it's our busiest time for the store. I had such grand ideas... send out fresh baked goods as gifts, for example. Ha. I haven't even had time to send anyone a card, much less bake in quantity. But soon we will have a day off, oh yes!

A lot has happened in a week or so. The most exciting is that I've decided I want to be a runner. Why is that weird? Well, for one thing I'm not the least bit athletic. I'm overweight, and I pretty much despise exercise. The only time I have ever consistantly kept up with an exercise routine is when Christy and I took yoga classes for two years. So here we are- day nine of my running experiment. I've gone out there six days out of the past nine. I'm pretty weak, I can't run for long. I have to go as far as I can, then walk. Everything hurts. My knees, shins, ankles, feet. It sucks. But for some reason, I still feel compelled to accomplish this. Ken is a good trainer too, by the way. He's a real runner. We'll see how long I can take it.
But anyway. Here's some pictures and stuff.

Moe! It's Moe's world, we just live in it. I like this picture because everything in it is Moe-ified. Not one but two scratchy posts in the background, along with a framed picture of him on the end table. What you can't see is Moe hair on every surface.

The store parking lot gets tagged pretty often with cool graffiti. I especially like this one that recently appeared because you don't see much graffiti that includes birdies wearing fat albert style hats.

We have a really sweet customer that owns a date farm. She sent us an amazing care package of fancy dates in several varieties. They taste fucking amazing, so sweet and good. There were a lot more than this, we had to give some away because there were too many for us to eat. This is what we kept:

dates

And Ken made banana bread with some of those lovely dates by following the recipe from HIAV. It turned out great!

Banana Bread from HIAV. Ken made it!

Tonight we wanted to try a new vegan feta cheese we got in at the store, so we made a pizza with one of those pre-made Rustic Crusts. We topped the sourdough crust with sauce, crumbled vegan feta, black olives, onions, and sun dried tomatoes. This was VERY GOOD. The feta is flavorful and nice, without being too stinky like real cheese. And I have enough sun dried tomatoes left over to (hopefully) whip up a batch of Creamy Tomato Soup from the Veganomicon tomorrow night. I've been craving the hell out of some tomato soup lately.

So yeah. More cooking should be happening next week, I hope!

That IS some cool graffiti...

Yay for you on the running! I am in the same boat; somewhat chubby, extremely non-athletic, etc. but over the summer I started a program called 'Couch to 5K' which helps you go from couch potato to being able to run 5K (~3 miles) in nine weeks, and it totally worked. You can even get podcasts from the internet to listen to that tell you when to walk and when to run; the breakdown changes each week.

I've been slacking a bit because of the crappy weather; I need to re-commit myself...

Thanks for the tip about Couch to 5k, Tamara. And I do admit that I've been less motivated now that the temp has dropped outside, but I need to push forward anyway.

that bird is pretty awesome. and what a fantastic gift, all those dates! I seriously think they're as good as chocolate, it must have been great to have access to so many kinds (you have lucky friends if you were giving them away). oh, and pizza = ooooh, nice. ^.^

hooray for banana bread with dates! as you know, i highly recommend it. :-) and congrats on trying running. i'm sure having a live-in trainer helps. sometimes i see myself running in my mind's eye, but it's not something i can make a reality. and every time i see moe, i feel like he needs a hat.

i thought i wanted to run too but i was wrong. good for you for keeping up with it. my hubby is also a fan of running, which is why i tried. i got stung by a bee the 1st day so i took that as a sign.
i need to come by and get some of that faux feta. that was one of my fave cheeses pre-vegan days. oh and we need to check out that graffiti
. . . it looks killer! cute and hardcore at the same time!

Hey Liz,
The dates are pretty amazing, although I don't know that I agree with your better than chocolate comparison :)

Laura- You're totally right. Moe always looks like he needs a hat! I need to get him more photoshopped hats, particularly a fedora.

Amy,
Thanks for the comment. And I wish I could try your fancy vegan ice cream I've heard so much about! Any southeast distribution plans in the future? ;)

Lori- I haven't been stung by a bee yet, but I might prefer that pain over my current knee pain. Stupid knees. Stupid running.
And the feta is pretty damn good.

I wish we lived closer together and had similar schedules. We could motivate each other.

You wouldn't motivate me, you would totally kick my ass! :P
