"That's what you get when you confuse your stomach with your heart"
- Stomach vs. Heart, Barenaked Ladies
My strong love for food began long before I went vegan. In fact, some of my most comforting memories as a child revolved around food in some way or another. From my mom "curing" our sad times by buying us many a McDonald's hot fudge sundae, to my dad offering up our choice of geedunks (military talk for sweets) every time we joined him on a trip to the gas station, my childhood was filled with a steady stream of food equals love. I was pretty much born to be a sugar baby, my genetic code stamped by a long family line of diabetics, depressives, and addicts.
Unfortunately, the fact that I sought comfort in food as a kid and still do today as an adult, probably isn't the healthiest thing to confess here on my food blog. But I'm gonna do it anyway, because I know I'm not the only one. The way I see it, there are worse vices to indulge in than delicious vegan food. I don't drink, smoke, or take drugs, but man, can I tuck into a batch of warm vegan chocolate chip cookies. Besides, I went vegan for ethical reasons, and the animals don't care how much sugar I eat.
I do have a goal to be healthier this year, since the best way to promote veganism is to be a healthy, vibrant vegan myself. That's why I will be scouring the VeganMofo blogs this month, looking for some healthy inspiration. Bring on the kale, people! I'm ready!

Braised romaine with kidney beans over quinoa. See? I do eat healthy sometimes.

That braised romaine looks delicious!
I'm with you on finding comfort in food--it's a struggle to stay healthy...which is why I guess I indulge pretty often (crepe cake anyone? hehe) Looks like you're off to a good start for the month at least with that rockin' quinoa!
my body is craving that food right now. no matter how hectic things are i have GOT to get to the market and prep out some good food this week. stupid daiya keeps leading me down fattening paths. ;-)
God, that looks good. Recipe, please? (btw, I love the look of healthy food, and I love the idea of healthy food, but I am damned lazy and my food group of choice is sweets, so my Evil Twin usually has her way with me).
It looks very good and healthy!
Thanks guys! The recipe is from the book Vegan Italiano, but it's really simple. just braise the romaine in a bit of olive oil with garlic, add the kidney beans, and serve over cooked quinoa.
